What Does a Fire Marshall Look for During an Inspection?

What to expect from your next fire inspection.

Even if you know that a fire marshal inspection is approaching, that doesn’t mean you are any less nervous about what they’ll say. By using inspection and testing services in advance, you can ensure that your property will be able to pass inspection. Here are some tips for what exactly the fire marshal will look for during their inspection.

What Should I Look for in Advance?

Take a walk through your property and look at the following to determine whether or not you’ll be ready (or use Fireline’s inspection and testing services to make sure you’ll be ready!):

  • Are there clear paths to and from each exit in your building? Are the exits able to open and close safely?
  • Do your emergency lights and emergency exit signs properly function?
  • Are extension cords used properly and safely within your business? They should not be used in place or permanent wiring, run through walls, or run through ceilings. Doubled up extension cords are also a common violation.
  • Do you have a Knox box outside of your business? These are required in case of emergency.
  • Are your shelves stacked so high that sprinklers won’t be able to do their job in the event of a fire? This is a major and common violation, especially in storage areas.
  • This is a major violation that places can face during open inspections and testing—are there too many people in your facility? The capacity or occupant load specified by the fire marshal cannot be exceeded without being in violation of the fire code.
  • Are the electrical panels in your business easy to access without moving anything around?
  • Do you have fire extinguishers that are current with their inspection date? Make sure that your fire alarms are also currently up to code and properly inspected.
  • Last but not least, are all of your sprinklers in good condition? The fire marshal will take a look at your valves and control devices.
