This is Not a Drill: You Need a Fire Safety Plan

Fire Safety Plan

Getting yourself organized can help protect your business and employees from a commercial fire. Get your fire safety plan together today!

Commercial fires can be devastating. Not only can you lose the business you’ve worked so hard to build, but it can also be dangerous for your employees. Every year there are about 70,000 to 80,000 workplace fires that cause an average of 200 deaths and 5,000 injuries. But when fires break out in your business, it is important to make sure you get your employees out safely. So how do you put together a fire safety plan? By reading this article.

Evaluating Hazards

The first step of any fire safety plan is to evaluate the potential fire hazards in your workplace. There are many different causes of workplace fires including neglected equipment and coffee pots left on. Keep an eye out for potential fire starters and note them for discussion during your fire prevention meetings. During these meetings, make sure to give all employees a first safety plan so they are able to find the exits in an emergency.

Detection

If a fire does occur in your building, it is important to have the correct equipment installed to not only fight the fire but to detect it. Detecting the fire as soon as possible will allow you’re your employees and guest to move safely out of the building. It is important to have more than one fire alert device stationed in your building in order to alert everyone there is a fire and to detect the fire as soon as possible. Check with your local ordinances to ensure your building is up to code.

Fire Captains

It is always a good idea to designate people as fire captains in your workplace. The role of a fire captain is to make sure people get out of your building as quickly as possible. They should also try to keep people calm and call 9-1-1 as soon as possible. For a small business, you can designate one person but for larger businesses or factories, it is a good idea to designate someone on each shift to ensure the workers are always covered. Fire captains should be trained in operating all of your fire equipment including fire extinguishers, manual alarms, and manual sprinkler systems.

Drills

Remember those fire drills we used to pray for in school? Well, they weren’t there to just get us out of class. Fire drills play an important role in workplace safety. The person or people appointed as fire captains should plan a random fire drill a few times a year in order to practice their skills and to keep employees up-to-date on fire safety. Employees should be told there to meet as well as how to exit each room of your facility. Know where to meet will help get a head count to see if people are still inside your building.
