Fire Extinguishers

The number and size of portable fire extinguishers required is set forth in the National Fire Protection Association Standard 10, Portable Fire Extinguishers.

Our salesmen are trained to access the building occupancy, the potential fire hazards and the anticipated class of fire before recommending the proper type and size of extinguishers required to meet the codes. Fireline makes recommendations without obligations and can assure delivery from our well stocked warehouse.

Pictured here are three common types of extinguishers. Ansul Cartridge Operated Extinguishers are made for heavy industry. These durable extinguishers which can be refilled "on the spot" and are used by most oil, chemical, steel and metal fabricating industries.

Pressurized Dry Chemical Extinguishers are the most common types of extinguishers used for building protection, are easy to operate and comply with all code requirements. These economical extinguishers come in all designs, types and shapes, but Fireline stocks only metal valve, quality manufactured fire extinguishers. We also offer wheeled engines for protecting special hazards.

Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers are a gaseous clean fire extinguishing agent with a proven track record. CO2 Extinguishers are used throughout industry and the computer/electronics field since the agent leaves no residue. Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers have been used in the United States since the 1920's with consistent reliability, and have an inexpensive recharge cost.

How to Use Extinguishers

Here is a mental checklist for a Fight-or-Flight Decision. Attempt to use an extinguisher only if all of the following apply.

  • The building is being evacuated.
  • The fire department is being called
  • The fire is small and contained
  • The exit is clear and you can fight the fire with your back
  • You can stay low and avoid smoke.
  • The proper extinguisher is available.
  • You have read the instructions and you know how to use the extinguisher.

Whenever possible, use the "Buddy System" to have someone back you up when using a fire extinguisher. If you have any doubt about your personal safety, or if you can extinguish a fire, leave immediately and close off the area. Recharge any discharged extinguisher immediately after use.
