Types of Fire Sprinkler Heads

sprinkler heads

There are many different types of sprinkler heads for you to choose from. Which one will suit your business’s needs?

Whether you are building a new facility or updating your old one with a new fire sprinkler system, you are going to need new sprinkler heads. While there are four different types of sprinkler heads to choose from, each head is different and deserves your consideration. Let’s take a look at each of these sprinkler heads and how they work.

How Do Fire Sprinkler Heads Work?

A typical sprinkler head consists of a plug, a glass ampule or other trigger mechanism, a deflector, cap, and a frame. When a fire is detected by the trigger mechanism, the glycerin-based liquid inside expands breaking the tube. Once the ampule breaks, the plug is forced out by the pressurized water and the water is released. The water flows out of the cap and hits the deflector plate, dispersing water into the room to extinguish the fire.

Pendant Heads

Pendant heads are the most common sprinkler heads because of their coverage. These heads extend from the ceiling to provide you with as much coverage as possible. When activated, these heads spray a stream of water downward onto the deflector.

Upright Heads

An upright sprinkler head sits on top of the water pipes and sprays the water upwards toward the deflector. Although it looks like a pendant head, this head should not be placed upside down.

Sidewall Heads

Sidewall sprinkler heads come out of the wall to protect small rooms and hallways from fires. A sidewall head has a fan-shaped deflector to disperse the water to the areas below. These heads are generally used in special areas that are not large enough for regular sprinkler heads.
