The Finest New Year’s Fire Safety Tips

The Finest New Year’s Fire Safety Tips

There are a couple of fire safety tips that can help you prepare for the new year.

A new year and a new decade are almost upon us, and you want to ensure that your apartment and your family are safe from any fires as you ring in 2020. There are a couple of fire safety tips that you can do over the next couple of weeks to help you prepare for a happy, healthy, and safe new year. Here are a handful of the finest fire safety tips for you and your family to follow this New Years.

Service Your Fire Extinguishers

Your number one line of defense in the case of a fire are portable fire extinguishers. Be sure that you have units installed adequately throughout your property as required by local code. But just as important, make sure that your fire extinguishers are serviced, tagged, and maintained consistently.

Check Up on Smoke and CO Detectors

Residental smoke and carbon monoxide detectors both have shelf lives, and that means you will have to swap out the batteries in your home fire alarm systems.

Change Any Batteries

For commercial systems, when you’re checking up on your alarm, make sure that your fire protection service company installs new batteries. It would be best if you didn’t leave the alarm without batteries in it at all. Systems should be updated every ten years or so, and you do not want to risk an older alarm being installed if a fire emergency happens. Give yourself peace of mind and update the alarm.

Practice an Escape Plan

One huge fire safety tip is to always practice your escape plan with your friends and family. Before throwing a New Year’s party, make sure everyone knows the route out of the building, where to go to, and that they should never, ever come back in the building once they’re out. Make this a part of your routine in your home. Practice and work out your plan if anything is in the way of your escape route.

Caution with Cooking

Another essential fire safety tip. Never leave items on your stove cooking unattended for any reason at all. Be sure that your kitchen appliances are monitored while being used or completely turned off when they aren’t being used. Most of the fires that begin in homes start within the kitchen area. Go over all cooking fire safety tips with your friends and family as they cook for the New Year’s party.
