Is Your Fire Alarm Constantly Making Noise?

Is Your Fire Alarm Constantly Making Noise?

Every commercial building, no matter their size needs to have a fire alarm system.

Every commercial building, no matter their size needs to have a fire alarm system. One reason for this is to abide by all fire safety codes. In the name of fire protection, it is often also necessary to have more than one system in place. Sometimes this is left for last after all of the other elements of a new construction building have been addressed.

The Alarm Keeps Ringing

Although it is normal and expected for fire alarms to make noise from time to time, there are times when it is excessive. Inspecting the system’s casing and replacing the batteries is a duty that many fire protection companies can fulfill for business owners. However, false alarms are a constant issue, and drawing first responders when there isn’t a need that can ruin a company’s reputation.

Here are some of the reasons why the alarm keeps ringing or making other types of noise:

The sensor is dirty: the sensor attached to the alarm could be filthy. Cleaning up the alarm sensors needs to be included as part of the maintenance package. If your current fire protection partner isn’t addressing this for, then it could be time to move on and find someone new instead.

Interruption of power: The power source of the fire alarm could have been interrupted by a power surge or outage. Even if the power is off for a few minutes before the backup generators active, this can be enough to cause a cascade of problems.

Loose battery: The batteries can come loose over time.

Humidity Interference: Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC are humid environments even as summer turns into fall. The humidity inside your building could be causing problems as well.

End of service life: At some point, fire alarm systems need to be replaced once they have reached the end of their expected lifespan.

Beeping or Chirping Noises

Business owners will often hear their commercial fire alarm systems emit strange beeping or chirping noises. These sounds are supposed to indicate when the battery levels get too low. When this happens, it’s time to call your fire protection partner. From there, they can double-check the current remaining battery levels, test the battery, and replace it as necessary. They can also clean the alarm off of any dust or debris that has collected on it, and lastly, replace the entire alarm system if the need arises.
