The Importance of Bi-Directional Amplifiers, Part 1

Bi-directional amplifiers can make a difference, especially in the event of a fire or other similar emergency.

In many buildings, facilitating communication is essential. That’s because the employees won’t always be able to communicate with each other face to face, as they are often separated by cubicles, individual offices, and even separate floors. Bi-directional amplifiers can make a difference, especially in the event of a fire or other similar emergency. These devices help spread the wireless signal throughout the facility. Here is a look at why they matter so much.

Quick Facts about Bi-Directional Amplifiers

Bi-directional amplifiers are known as BDAs for short. They act as amplifiers and repeaters with multiple options for setup and deployment. They can gather any available wireless signals and make them stronger than before, no matter which frequencies they run on. Since cement and steel tend to inhibit signal transmission – making the signals weaker – basements, stairwells, elevators, tunnels, and parking structures tend to have signal reception issues. Unfortunately, this can make responding to fires and other incidents much more difficult.

BDAs are often installed to help improve the situation for first responders when they arrive on-scene. Workers also need to have them, especially when what they do could cause a fire. In both cases, both systems must be optimized so that they can survive extreme conditions that many other users ordinarily would not have to encounter: heat, chemical spills, dark tunnels, or no access to electricity. Public safety BDAs are also configured differently than cellular BDAs since the public safety variant is designed to run two-way radios and the cellular one is not.

Businesses That Need Them

If a building needs to have public safety permits, then it needs to have bi-directional amplifiers. Local laws, regulations, and guidelines can also determine which businesses need to have these amplifiers installed. New buildings across the country need to be outfitted with them, and the same directive applies whenever commercial buildings receive remodels or renovations. Government facilities, schools, sports complexes, tunneling and mining operations, public forums, hospitals, highrise buildings, hotels, and offices all need them as well. Warehouses also need to have them, especially in a large facility. As noted above, the locations where first responders, maintenance, and security guards need to be able to stay in communication with one another – virtually anywhere people gather for one reason or another – will require these systems as well.
