How to Keep Your Fire Sprinklers Safe Between Inspections

How to Keep Your Fire Sprinklers Safe Between Inspections

While your sprinkler system is only inspected once a year, how can you take care of them the other 364 days of the year?

Your fire sprinklers have a very big job to do but they can only do it if they are treated well. While most people think a fire sprinkler inspection is all they need to keep their sprinklers in order, there are some things you should be doing or not doing to keep your sprinklers in order. Let’s take a look at how to keep your fire sprinklers safe between your inspections.

Never Hang Anything From Fire Sprinklers

While it can be tempting not to put holes in your ceiling with thumbtacks or nails and to just used your sprinkler heads to hang decorations, it is important for you to refrain. No matter how light the decorations are, any amount of pressure put on to your sprinkler heads can damage them. Sprinkler systems have a big job to do and any amount of pressure on their small parts could leave them too damaged to do it. Hanging items or inserting items into the device could break or interfere with the mechanisms. You should also make sure not to damage your sprinkler system while decorating.

Never Paint Your Fire Sprinklers

It may seem like a good idea to paint your fire sprinklers so they blend into your decor better, but this can be dangerous. Dried paint could compromise the sprinkler’s functionality and interfere with the way it is activated in an emergency. Paint can cause the mechanism to catch and slow down or stop the flow of water, leaving your space and employees vulnerable.

Keep the Temperature Consistent to Avoid Freezing

While it may make sense to turn off the heat in your business when no one is in the office, this is definitely a bad practice. Leaving your heat off during a particularly cold night can actually cause your sprinklers to freeze. When the water freezes in the pipes, there is not only blockages and interference with water flow, it can also cause your pipes to burst as the pressure builds up. Make sure to leave the heat on low during the winter to avoid freezing temperatures.

These are just some of the things you should do to avoid damage to your fire sprinkler system between your yearly inspections. For more information on your fire sprinkler systems or to schedule your next inspection, call Fireline today!
