What You Should Know About Fire Extinguisher Maintenance

Even though it can be years before it’s time to replace the unit, keeping an eye out for potential issues can ensure timely maintenance that extends the lifespan of each extinguisher.

There is no question that functional fire alarm systems can protect your commercial building. However, you can’t stop there. Adding fire extinguishers and fire sprinklers also makes a difference. Portable fire extinguishers, in particular, are much easier to move around where you need to deploy them. That said, all of your employees need to be able to find them in case of an emergency. But how do you know when they need to be maintained?

Servicing the Fire Extinguishers

Every month, fire extinguishers should be inspected for any potential problems. Even though it can be years before it’s time to replace the unit, keeping an eye out for potential issues can ensure timely maintenance that extends the lifespan of each extinguisher. A technician who has the proper training should conduct these inspections because the average building owner will not know what they should be looking for; more in-depth reviews should be performed once every year.

How Inspections Are Carried Out

Now let’s look at how these inspections are supposed to be completed. All maintenance tags need to be kept up to date – anything allowed to fall out of date is invalid. Also, the extinguisher needs to be fully charged. That’s because a partial charge can lead to pressurization in the chamber being too low. It’s also problematic because the extinguishers can run out of charge before the fire is entirely under control. All fire extinguishers need to be easy to find, and with their anti-tamper seals unbroken. The nameplate needs to be fully visible and cannot be obscured. Finally, the technicians will be looking for any signs of the extinguishers being damaged in any way.
