Novec 1230 vs. FM200: a Comparison of Fire Suppression Systems

Novec 1230 vs. FM200: a Comparison of Fire Suppression Systems

There are two prevalent fire suppression systems that you should become familiar with.

If you need fire protection for your building where fire sprinklers may not provide adequate protection for your equipment, you may need to install a fire suppression system. Most fire suppression systems can protect your building, assets, and people by using an agent other than water. There are two prevalent fire suppression systems that you should become familiar with. These are the Novec 1230 and FM200 systems. Here is a comparison of both fire suppression systems.

Novec 1230, What is it?

The Novec 1230 fire suppression system is a clean agent system. The Novec 1230 uses a fluid fluoroketone to extinguish a fire quickly. This system reacts to fire immediately, leaves behind no residue, and is exceptionally non-conductive. Some of the different applications for the Novec 1230 include data centers, telecommunication facilities, archives, and museums, and historical artifacts. Other applications include marine, oil and gas applications and aerospace, aviation, and military structures as well.

FM200, What is it?

Fm200 is a hydrofluorocarbon, a type of replacement for the natural ozone-depleting Halon fire suppression systems. FM200 is a fast-acting, clean agent system that leaves absolutely no residue behind. There is a minimal clean-up that’s required after the system discharge and less downtime after some fire. FM200 systems are normally used in areas such as data centers, telecommunication facilities, and military applications.

Factors to Consider When Picking

The Novec 1230 and FM200 are both fast-acting, clean agent fire suppression systems that can be used in several different facilities. It can be tough to decide between the two kinds of systems. Here are some factors you might want to consider when picking a fire suppression system.

Storage

Both the FM200 and Novec 1230 are stored in cylinders in liquid form. The Novec 1230 might require slightly more cylinders than the FM200, but that all depends on the size of the building.

Environmental Impact

The two types of systems differ when it comes to their impact on the environment. Both agents cause no ozone depletion, either. FM200 has a global warming potential of around 3500, while Novec 1230 has a global warming potential of 1, making it the environmentally-friendly choice.

Cost

It might be more cost-effective to install one fire suppression system compared to another kind. Talk to professionals from Fireline to find out which system is more cost-effective and better suited for you.
