Simple Tips for Ensuring Fire Safety During the Holidays

Fire safety is always important.

Fire safety is always important. Businesses and private homeowners everywhere need to observe common sense to avoid any harm coming to them and their guests, especially during the busy holiday season. Here are some simple tips for ensuring fire safety.

Use Candles Safely

Using candles can add to the ambiance of a quiet, romantic meal or a special celebration that happens to occur during the holiday season. If the candles are to be lit in a commercial building, exercise the same amount of caution that you would in a home. Make sure that all candles are fully extinguished before leaving the room; that way, there is someone around to watch them. In many cases, it’s much safer to use electric candles instead of wax ones that require a flame to light.

Meal Preparation

Fire safety is also immensely important to observe during meal preparation. While many businesses will host holiday parties for their employees at offsite locations, if your business has a kitchen or you are part of the food-service sector, then it’s just as important to be careful when cooking. Kitchen fires can be just as dangerous as fires in other areas of the building. Carefully watch all dishes being prepared and stop small fires by putting a lid over the fire and turning off the stove. Give the pots and pans time to cool off before removing them from the stove for cleaning, because the remaining heat can transfer to other items and could ignite.

Tree and Lighting Safety

Decorating for the holidays is another fun activity that can make your business more festive. However, as with the other ways to prevent fires we have outlined above, you and your employees must follow all fire safety guidelines. Keep Christmas trees away from any other possible sources of heat or fire starters. Water the tree every day so that it doesn’t dry out, and avoid blocking the exits, emergency or otherwise.

Lastly, since offices can reuse old strings of lights for years on end, make sure that all wires are still in good condition and that they are no sparks or exposed cords since these can increase the chances of an electrical fire happening.
