What to Do When It’s Time to Recharge Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are some of the most critical assets that you will ever have.

Fire extinguishers are some of the most critical assets that you will ever have. That’s why it is so essential that you keep them well-maintained. It’s easy to think that you continue to rely on the same fire extinguishers you’ve held onto for ten years because never need to use them, or when you do, you only a small amount of the charge inside it. But fire extinguishers will eventually be overdue for a recharge.

Different Signs to Look Out For

  1. It was recently used: If you recently had to put out a fire, it’s time to recharge the extinguisher that you used. Having more than one fire extinguisher is always a good idea, even in a relatively small business. Using even a small amount of the pressurized charge can lead to leaking. Leaking will mean that the cylinder is no longer as pressurized as it was, and anything left inside the tank will not dispense as forcefully as you need it to; get ahead of the problem before your next emergency.
  2. Inspections revealed problems: When it comes to fire extinguishers, you mustn’t neglect regularly-scheduled inspections. These inspections can reveal problems with the fire extinguisher that you won’t be able to find during a quick visual check, especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for already.
  3. Apparent problems: If the pressure readings are too low, then it is a sign that the fire extinguishers in question need some recharging. This also applies if you can’t read the operating instructions, or the seals are broken. In the case of tampering, you also need to recharge the fire extinguishers.
  4. Pressure gauge no longer functions: The pressure gauge stops working occasionally. This is a problem of a different caliber. Getting it fixed is the only way to tell if the unit is undercharged, overcharged, or within safe operational parameters.
