What fire safety tips should I keep in mind during Polar Vortex Winter Weather?

This week we are feeling the full effect of a Polar Vortex. This life threatening cold snap can keep us indoors to protect ourselves from dangerous cold temperatures and wind chills. It’s only the beginning of the New Year and we are experiencing some of the coldest temperatures we have seen in decades (and for some people, a lifetime).

How can you stay safe and warm as we experience a Polar Vortex?

You need to make your home or commercial as fire safe as possible. Practicing the best fire safety is how you can be most prepared for unexpected winter weather such as a Polar Vortex.

Here is a list of essential fire safety measurements you should consider this winter:

  • Have fire alarms (specifically smoke detectors) and carbon monoxide detectors installed on every level of your building.

  • Never leave candles or any type of flame unattended. Yes, that means not leaving your kitchen stovetops unattended.

  • Have fireplaces and any other heating equipment inspected before usage.

  • Have fire extinguishers close at hand for areas using space heaters or kerosene heaters.

The wintertime is when we spend the most time in residential and commercial businesses. Winter is also the time of year where we are most vulnerable to fire hazards because we are more likely to unsafely use heat sources. In fact, Carbon monoxide emergencies occur most often during the winter. It’s a silent killer because the carbon monoxide gas is odorless, colorless and invisible.

CO detectors should be installed on every level of a residential building. Example: college dorms. The best CO alarms are interconnected systems; so all building occupants know that carbon monoxide gas is present. CO alarm system testing should be performed monthly during the wintertime for the best fire safety precautions.

By following cost effective, simple fire precautions you can keep your building safe and sound all winter long.
