New Year Fire Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

New Year’s Fire Safety Tips to Keep in Mind

Make sure that your family, friends, and home are protected from fire this New Years.

A new year is almost upon us, and you will want to make sure that your house and family are fire safe as you celebrate. There are a few things to help you prepare for a happy, healthy, and safe new year. Make sure that your family, friends, and home are protected from fire. Read on for a few tips as you celebrate New Years!

Service All of Your Fire Extinguishers before the New Year

Your very first line of defense in case of fire are portable fire extinguishers. Make sure that there are properly installed fire extinguishers throughout your home. Just as important, make sure that your fire extinguishers are being serviced, tagged, and maintained on a regular basis before the new year.

Check Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors need to be checked on a regular basis. Batteries must be replaced when you change your clocks in the spring and fall. Check out the date on the detector itself and replace it in accordance with manufacturers recommendations. Generally, they should be replaced every ten years. Don’t take the risk of an old detector not working. Also, check to make sure there is no dirt or dust obstructing the unit. Give yourself peace of mind by thoroughly checking your detectors on a regular basis.

Change All Batteries for the New Year

This is discussed above but it is the single most important maintenance activity to ensure your detectors will work when needed. Make sure you install new, fresh batteries when you change your clocks. It is essential that you don’t leave the detector without batteries. Install them as soon as you take out the old ones to ensure you don’t forget.

Practice Your Fire Escape Plan

It’s vitally important to practice fire escape plan with your entire family. Ensure that they know how to get out of the house, where to go, and not to come back in the house once they have left. Know alternate routes in case the primary exit is blocked. Practice this fire escape plan regularly and make sure all family members know it.

Check Your Wiring

Make sure to inspect all appliances and electric outlets. Any items that have loose or cracked wiring shouldn’t be used. They should be replaced. Limit the use of extension cords and don’t overload circuits.
