While this isn’t necessarily a fire prevention tip, cleaning up your office can help to keep fires to spreading throughout your office. Clutter contributes to fires by providing fuel and limited access. Clutter can also help to block exits and emergency equipment when people try to help put out the fires. Make sure you and your employees work to keep files and other items away from anything that could catch on fire or anything that might be used to put out the fires.

Machinery and Oils

One of the main causes of fires in factories, mechanic shops, and repair shops is the sparks causes by friction. When your machinery overheats or causes friction sparks, it is extremely important to shut down the machine right away and allow it to cool down. These sparks could catch fire on your clothing, hats, or any oil spills on the floor of your shop. If you have any oily rags or wipes, it is important to keep them in a safe, closed container to avoid being hit by sparks.

Electrical Hazards

Electrical hazards are one of the most prevalent fire starters in any home or business. Many fires start out because of faulty wiring and malfunctioning electrical equipment. If you aren’t sure about the wiring in a part of your building, do not plug anything in. It is important not to make any attempts to wire items yourself so make sure to call a certified electrician for any electrical repairs.


When storing chemicals, it is important to make sure you are storing them correctly. Check the labels of your chemicals to ensure you are storing them in the correct temperature as well as lighting. Storing them incorrectly could lead to explosions or flammable vapors that could spark a fire.

Equipment and Training

Just as important as to know how to operate a piece of your equipment, it is also important for your employees to know how to operate your fire safety equipment. Knowing where the sprinkler systems, emergency stop, and electrical stop buttons are located is an important part of keeping your business from fire damage. You should also make sure every employee knows where to find and how to work your fire extinguishers and where to go if your building has to be evacuated.
