Electrical fires can happen in any business. That’s because we depend on modern technology of all kinds to help make our lives and our jobs easier. It’s easy enough to understand how to use a fire extinguisher whenever other types of fires start, but it’s different when the fire happens in a computer server room. Here are the types of fire extinguishers that are necessary.
Ensuring that the correct fire extinguishers are in place greatly increases your fire protection capabilities. If the wrong fire extinguisher is used for a fire in a computer server room, it could mean that the fire is fed instead of contained. Parts of your building can be damaged, and you can lose valuable equipment and documents in the fire. Your employees and visitors are also exposed to harm. That’s why it’s important to know the difference between the types of fire extinguishers.
ABC and BC dry chemical extinguishers can be effective, but they also leave behind a stubborn residue that can damage the computer equipment you depend on. The solution is to use clean agent fire extinguishers instead.
Clean Agent Fire Extinguishers
Clean agent fire extinguishers are specifically designed to combat electrical fires while preserving your delicate electrical and electronic equipment. Here is some more information about them:
Halocarbon: Halocarbon fire extinguishers could be the best choice for your computer server room. There’s no residue left behind, and two common extinguishing agents are HCFC-123, also known as Halotron I, and FE-36, also known as CleanGuard.
Halon 1211: Halon 1211 is a gas that was used in older fire extinguishers. However it is no longer produced in the United States and has been replaced by more environmentally-friendly halocarbon extinguishers. Any new Halon 1211 is recycled from older units. These extinguishers are still used, because they are safe to use against electrical fires, but are less commonly found.
CO2: CO2 fire extinguishers are effective against Class B and Class C fires. They don’t leave a residue, don’t conduct any electricity, and doesn’t fill the area with potentially dangerous gasses. These extinguishers work by starving the fire of oxygen, eventually putting the fire out.
