A Guide to Fire Pumps

If you have a fire pump or need one installed in your building having a basic understanding of the different types can be helpful.

Fire pumps are used in commercial buildings where the water supply is insufficient to meet the needs of the fire sprinkler and standpipe systems. They can have electric or diesel engine drivers, although electric-driven pumps are more common. If you have a fire pump or need one installed in your building having a basic understanding of the different types can be helpful. In this blog, we will highlight the main types of fire pumps. Horizontal Split Case

The horizontal split case fire pump is the most common type for commercial buildings. It is easy to operate and maintain and fire protection professionals prefer this type. It needs an external water source. This fire pump is extremely durable and reliable, making it one of the top choices for fire systems.

Vertical Split Case Fire Pumps

The vertical split case fire pump is very similar to the horizontal pump, but they take up less space since they’re installed vertically. If space is a problem, then this may be the best option. An added benefit, since the pump is installed vertically, it will reduce the risk of motor flooding.

Vertical In-Line Fire Pumps

The vertical in-line fire pump is a bit smaller and more compact than the split fire case pumps. This means that you can save much more space, which is ideal for smaller buildings. A disadvantage is that you must disassemble and remove the entire unit when it is time for service or maintenance.

Vertical Turbine Fire Pumps

The vertical turbine fire pump can use water from nearby wells and tanks. Unlike other fire pumps, it can operate without priming. It works by moving water up through the column pipe. Then the water stays at the top of the pump so it could be dispensed once needed.
