Carbon dioxide is a common compound for every living thing. Humans exhale carbon dioxide after taking a breath, plants take in carbon dioxide to produce oxygen. The benefit of using carbon dioxide in fire suppression is that the compound is able to attack each point of the fire triangle; oxygen, heat, and fuel. Carbon dioxide depletes the amount of oxygen in the fire area while also cooling the area, helping to stop the open flame and kill the fire. Currently, carbon dioxide is used in two different applications when it comes to fire suppression:
Total Flooding Application
The total flooding application is used to fill an enclosed hazard area with a carbon dioxide vapor to a certain concentration. It is best used with both deep-seated fires and surface fires. The local application is used on a smaller level and targets a “local” hazard. This application is best used during fires burning in a flammable gas or liquid. There are two different systems that use the application of carbon dioxide to suppress fires. They are:

Low Pressure Systems
